Here are some things you can do to repair electric garage doors before calling professionals. All that is needed is a few tools and a little expertise – and a willingness to try. At minimum, we need the tools, a wet cloth, the garage door manual, and some batteries. The manual is important because it contains instructions how to troubleshoot or resolve common issues.
To start off, check if the cord of the garage door opener is plugged into an electrical outlet and if the door’s “lock” feature is turned on. Checking those two things may feel silly, but they are often the reason garage doors may not work. Unplug and re-plug the cord to the outlet, and then check the owner’s manual for the lock.
Next check the batteries of the remote control opener and see if they just need replacing. If the remote control still does not work after replacing the batteries, then the remote might have “deprogrammed”. Again, check our owner’s manual for any section indicating how to reprogram the remote.
Usually, the remote control works but its beam sensor “eyes” may be dirty. Clean the sensor eyes using a wet cloth, and then point the beam towards the garage door. Lastly, check if the chain in the garage door is broken. If the chain is broken or needs replacing, then that is when you should call a professional garage door repair company.
